I’m very proud to have finally completed my ABC of BJJ poster and colouring book. They are available from two different print-on-demand websites. The poster can be bought here and the book is found here.
The poster is available in a variety of sizes at my Redbubble print on demand store. There is a choice of vertical format or horizontal. The one I am holding in the photo is the Medium sized ‘poster’ print (592mm x 840mm). There is a smaller version and bigger size version than the one I am holding. There are also ‘art prints’ which are smaller and printed on nicer paper.
The colouring book can be purchased through print on demand book publishing company Blurb. The main website is blurb.com and by default, books are priced in US dollars. If you go to the top right corner however, there is a flag and if you click on it, there are several other country options eg UK, Australia, several European countries eg Germany etc. If your country isn’t listed, just use the main Blurb.com site and they will ship to wherever you are. The book costs US $16.12 (£12.69 GBP, Euros 13,90) + Blurb will add Sales Tax and Shipping to the displayed book price.
The ABCs
Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a BJJ technique that begins with that letter. For some letters there were lots of techniques to choose from, for example the letter S. But for others, such as X or Y, there wasn’t as many options. Regardless, I tried to make sure the techniques I chose were reasonably familiar to both kids and adult students. The book includes brief text to explain the technique.
A book with just an A-Z would be a bit thin and not great value in my opinion so I included a bunch of bonus colouring in pages. These include six pages of techniques named after numbers and a fun double page spread called Where’s Meerkatsu? Which was inspired by the popular children’s book, Where’s Wally (aka Waldo for US readers).
Colouring
Depending on your regional book printer, the book is made using paper that has a slight sheen on the surface. I don’t unfortunately have any control of the paper stock used. If you see my images below, you’ll see how the page copes with a variety of colouring pens.
Colouring pencils are the best option if you don’t want to ruin the other side of the page. But the lack of bite on the paper means that the colours aren’t as rich when compared to felt tip or marker pens – I used Ohuhu water-based markers, which are very cheap off Amazon. I also did a small bit using alcohol-based markers.
That being said, my junior BJJ students who tested them out didn’t seem to mind the bleed-through when they used their felt tip pens.
